Mary Stevenson Cassatt

This assignment will analyze Mary Stevenson Cassatt artist that existed during the
impressionism period. She is an American printmaker and painter who focused on depicting
women’s lives, especially the relationship between a child and a mother. As a child, she liked
traveling, thus exposing her to various works of the greatest painters in 1855 in Paris. In the later
years, Pissarro and Degas were among her fellow painters and mentors. She started studying art
as a profession when she was 15 years. She moved from the U.S to Paris to further her studies in
art. In 1906, she received the French Legion of Honor. She died in 1926, but her artworks have
been used on the U.S postage stamps.

One of the common paintings by Cassatt is Children Playing on the Beach. As in most of
her paintings, she used the traditional oil on canvas painting type in this artwork. Also, this
painting represents the use of gouache by this artist. It refers to an opaque watercolor paint that
includes a mixture of pigment with a natural gum binder. Gouache allowed her to include vibrant
colors, as evident in the purple on one of the child’s hat. Additionally, she used a blend of pastels’
soft colors. She used soft pastel tones in white, purple, and blue. I think that was one of Cassatt’s
works that depicted her superior skill with process and color. Although palettes were scarce
during this period, she successfully brought out multiple shades that made the artwork appear to
echo contrasting moods. For instance, the sky and river’s subtle blue shows a cool feeling, but the
vivid blue in the girl’s dress shows happiness and a welcoming atmosphere.
Furthermore, this artwork presents Cassatt’s strength patterning and structure. The
brushstrokes consistently follow the girl’s head, legs, and arms’ contours, resulting in color
consistency throughout her painting (National Gallery of Art). The artist’s focus on limited
subjects in the paint facilitated the experimentation with composition painterly qualities and
formal elements. Limiting the background objects, forward tilting of the picture plane, and
cropping the scene helped increase attention to the girls’ activities and the general mood in the
picture. By showing the children focused on their respective activities, Cassatt successfully
incorporated the impressionism period’s naturalistic attitude.
The primary characteristic of impressionism was the ability of the artist to depict the
subjective responses and emotions that the objects were likely to evoke within the audience than
showing objective reality (Boorman, 1986). Cassatt achieved this objective by applying formal
elements dynamically throughout the painting and primitivism and distortion. The white accents
show the presence of light from the girls’ pails and dresses. The artist was able to apply jarring
4
colors, rapid brushwork, and distorted lines consistently to show the scenes in the paint and the
emotions evoked by the artwork, which was a critical characteristic during the impression
movement. Cassatt was successful in matching colors, making it difficult for the copyist to
duplicate her work. Through this paint, it is easier for the audience to determine the emotions the
artist was trying to depict. She showed her subjects, the girls, in a raw form using intense colors
and expressive brushstrokes. One of the lessons from Cassatt Children Playing on the
Beach artwork is that the ability to use colors effectively and manipulate paint and brush to
develop a beautiful paint was a major characteristic of the successful artists during the
impressionism period.
