1) Please read the attached PDF about the term, “Orientalism.”Orientalism: “Western viewpoint of the Orient (Middle East, North Africa, India) as exotic and barbaric.”(It is long and does contain jargon that you may not understand but I challenge you to read thoroughly as I believe the idea of “the exotic East” Said talks about in art history is foundational for the Wests “understanding” of other cultures not of white Europe.)Also, watch this short clip to summarize (PLEASE still read article!)2) Answer the following question about the reading:Do you agree with the author, Edward Said, that images of non-European cultures are “Othered?” (to be an outsider of the dominant culture).
