Introduction
Standardization has played a critical role in architecture. Architects attempt to develop their own
standards in order to define a good architectural design. Architectural historians categorize buildings
and monuments into certain periods based on their standards. Modernism in architecture was the
product of the search for new standards and of moving away from the past. Postmodernism, in
particular, was the result of criticizing the modern standard. Le Corbusier argued that Parthenon
underwent gradual refinement over time, with many of its temples having been changed time and
again to achieve its current beauty and maintain its architectural rhythm. He called this a slow process
of standardization.
Standardization aims to facilitate a common measurement of all things; in this sense, standardization
has become a measuring and evaluating tool. When there is a standard, you know how you are doing
compared with others. At the same time, standardization has become a common tool used by some
architects to establish their own standards in order to dominate the profession. As can be observed, the
idea of standardization is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, standardization promotes and
reinforces what good architecture should be. On the other hand, standardization has become an ideal
tool to justify and legitimize architectural design methods and techniques, including practices of
colonial authority. Furthermore, standardization established by the architectural discourse often has
reinforced racial and social injustice and inequality. I have included some examples below.

The notion of color “White” representing purity, innocence, divine beauty, modern, and the
descendent of ancient Greek
The idea of “Polychromy” criticizing the “Whiteness” by pointing out that the Parthenon was
constructed with various colors
The concept of “Orientalism” reinforcing the European dominance over colonial nations
The 1851 Great Exhibition (The Crystal Palace, London, England) showcasing the cultural
dominance over the world
The 1889 World’s Fair (Eiffel Tower, Paris, France) showcasing the technological dominance
over the world
Le Corbusier attempting to have a new standard with the Modulor Man
Le Corbusier publishing “Towards An Architecture” pointing to the machine aesthetics as the
modern standard and asking architects and designers to update their “Eyes”
Philip Johnson and Henry-Russell Hitchcock curating “Modern Architecture: International
Exhibition” to promote the “International Style” as the modern standard
The 1934 “Redlining” policy by the Federal Housing Administration promoting a “statesponsored system of segregation”
Patrik Schumacher proposing “Parametricism” as a new “global” standard and style, defining
postmodernism and deconstructivism as “transitional episodes”
Thus, acknowledging the influence of standardization in architecture—whether it is a positive and
productive approach or a constraint that limits architects’ ability to participate in the profession—is
critical.

All the above aspects need to be clear but concise, as you are going to unpack them in the body
of your paragraph.
2. Topic sentences for each body paragraph
a. What is the paragraph about, and how is the paragraph related to the previous one?
Support the thesis statement that you established in the introductory paragraph.
