The image I choose is The Tank Man of 1989 by Jeff Widener. The reason the photo is
included in the “100 Most Influential Images of All Time” is how it shows resilience and
courage in a man willing to stand up against the Chinese troops. According to Times Magazine
(2020), the subject of the photograph shows the face of the courage of the pro-democracy
demonstrators by one Chinese civilian. The photo is iconic because the people thought the man
was going to be killed, but the tanks tried to go round him. Looking at the photograph, it is clear
to detect that the form in the image shows three dimensions. There are shadows on the right side.
The light is coming from the left side. Since it is day time, the light from the sun creates shadows
that give the subjects in the photo form. Due to the way the light hits the subjects in the picture, it
establishes lightness and darkness as indicated by Taylor (2015). This is the content of the
photograph and portrays the texture of the subjects as smooth in the image. The image grabs my
attention because it shows a man courageous enough to stand against a machine that would kill
him. It shows human bravery during the times oppression by the government of China was at its
peak. It makes me think that despite the hardship people go through, there comes a time a person
has to stand his or her ground for change. The moral implication surrounding the image is the
killing, torture, and abuse of government based dictatorship.
