Film Essay Paper One (Due Week 4) – ARTH 334 6982 Understanding Movies (2205) – UMGC Learning Management System
PAPERS
-There are Two Papers assigned.
General Instructions for each of the two papers.
FILM PAPER 1 DUE JULY 14
FILM PAPER 2 DUE JULY 28
You will be responsible for watching a film and writing a 3-5 page essay in which you
respond to prompts which will be provided for each paper. (This means at least 3
pages include the “My Criteria for Quality in Film” page and no longer than 5
pages. These assignments are reaction papers, not plot summaries or research
papers. The key element here is that you will be telling the instructor what you have
to say about the film, not what others have said.
In a 100-level course, you would perhaps be asked to write about what you saw on
the screen. In a 200-level course, you will be asked to say what you think about what
you saw. In this 300-level course, you are expected to explain why you think the way
you do about the film, and to justify your explanation on (using references to subjects
found in the weekly content in the LEO classroom.
You will be responsible for turning in these assignments to the proper assignment
folder in LEO.
Putting these assignments off until the last possible moment probably will not work
very well. Each of them requires you to view an additional film besides the ones you
will be watching for the week’s discussion, so you should be sure to leave yourself
enough time to view the necessary film, think about it, write a first draft, and then edit
and revise.
Part of your responsibility in this course is to make any and all arrangements
necessary to allow you to view the films, think and write about them, and turn
your assignments in by their respective due dates. Some of the films you watch
may be available for streaming via Netflix or another online content provider; others
may be available for checkout from your local public library, while others may need to
be rented.
Be sure to spell the names of the directors, actors, screenwriters, and other people
correctly (this can cause “points” to be taken off the final grade for that paper). Any
name that is not listed in the credits that begin or end in the film is a name you do not
need to mention.
The papers will be graded based on such elements as evidence that you are reading
and viewing the material, the course content, references, and comparisons to other

films you have seen (in or out of class and throughout your lifetime as a movie
watcher), and especially to films you have previously written about; use of the film
vocabulary introduced in class; clear presentation of your opinions; reasonable
explanations and justifications to support those opinions; and college-level writing
skills (spelling, punctuation, and grammar). Other criteria will be presented to you as
appropriate.
You are better off watching these films on the largest possible screen, and at the
highest possible resolution.
Paper One Assignment for Film one (F1) Due July 14th
Part 1: View a feature film made between 1940–1970 you have not seen before (or
will see later in this class) by a great director. If you would like to see an American
film, consider seeing something directed by Frank Capra, George Cukor, John Ford,
George Stevens, Preston Sturges, Billy Wilder, or William Wyler. If you would like to
try a foreign film consider Ingamr Bergman (Swedish), Luis Buñuel (Spanish), Claude
Chabrol (French), Frederico Fellini (Italian), Akira Kurosawa (Japanese), Lina
Wetmuller (German) or the British team known as “The Archers” made up of Michael
Powell and Emeric Pressburger. These are suggestions but not a comprehensive list
of possibilities. For a much more extensive list, you may want to
visit http://www.filmsite.org/directors.html. (Note that many directors were active both
before and after 1970. Make sure you see a pre-1970 film, Make sure it’s a film you
have not seen before, and make sure it is a feature. Don’t, for example, see Buñel’s
UN CHIEN ANDALOU, which is a short, not a feature.)
Comment on the specific film you saw. Pay particular attention to the camerawork,
(cinematography) the editing (montage) and the sound (this can include the music).
What did you like, and what did you dislike, about what you saw? Why do you like the
things you like, and why do you dislike the things you dislike? Is the film a good film,
or is it not? (Note: This is not the same question as whether or not you liked it. It is
entirely possible to like a film that you are aware is not very good.) You should
comment on the film both as a representative of its genre and as a film.
Part 2:
Now that you have commented on the specific film you viewed, see if you can draw
some general conclusions about the work of the director and of the main actors or
actresses. For example let us say you watched the 2012 film Prometheus (no this is
not a film you can watch for this paper). Did you like Ridley Scott as a Filmmaker?
Did you like Michael Fassbender in the roll of an emotionless android? Why, or why
not? Be sure to comment on the overall impression you had on the film, including
how you see it as an example of its genre and time period. Remember, this is not a
research paper. I am interested in what you have to say, not in what you can learn by
reading up on the film or the filmmaker.

Film Essay Paper One (Due Week 4) – ARTH 334 6982 Understanding Movies (2205) – UMGC Learning Management System
Part 3:
On a separate page, insert the heading “My Criteria for Quality in Film.” Under that
heading, use your comments about this film and its filmmaker as guidelines towards
proposing five general statements indicative of your personal taste in movies. These
statements should be numbered (1) through (5) and they should be written as
complete sentences or a short paragraph. It might be useful to introduce each
statement with such language as “Excellent movie feature,” or “A movie is more likely
to be good if,” or “A characteristic of high quality cinema is.” (For example, if you
commented in the body of your essay that you liked the acting because it was
realistic and you liked the script because it had a happy ending, you could propose
these two statements as criteria for quality: “(1) Excellent movies feature realistic
acting. (2) A movie is more likely to be good if it ends happily.” Do not jut put
something like “Good movies feature good acting.” The point here is for you to think
about—and then explain—what such quality words as good, excellent, and effective
actually mean. Be sure to save your “My Criteria” page to your hard drive—you will
be adding more items to this list and resubmitting an expanded version of it for the
second paper later in this course.
Assignment for Film Two
Part 1:
View a feature film made between 1970–2000 you have not seen before (or will see
later in this class) by a great director or featuring a great actor or actress. Just as you
did in the first paper, comment on the specific film you saw. Pay particular attention to
the screen play, camerawork (cinematography) the editing (montage) and the sound
(this can include the music). You may also address special effects. Again, as you did
in the first paper, talk about what you like, and what you dislike, about what you saw?
Why do you like the things you like, and why do you dislike the things you dislike? Is
the film a good film, or is it not?
Part 2: Now that you have commented on the specific film you viewed, see if you can
draw some general conclusions about the work of the director and of the main actors
or actresses.
Be sure to comment on the overall impression you had of the film, including how you
see it as an example of its genre and time period. Remember, this is not a research
paper. I am interested in what you have to say, not in what you can learn by reading
up on the film or the filmmaker.
Part 3:
Go back to the “My Criteria for Quality in Film” page. Based on your viewing this
week’s film, add five new general conclusions. These statements should be
numbered (6) through (10). Be sure to include entire page, including all of your
previous criteria statements.

July 8, 2020
“Rosemary’s Baby” (1968)
Rosemary’s Baby (1968), was directed by Roman Polanski as a Horror/Drama movie.
The Filmed stared Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes as Guy & Rosemary Woodhouse. The
reason I choose this film is because it was outside of my genre of interest. Horror is not an area
of movie I gravitate to being a fan of science fiction. As I research for something new to watch
for my assignment, the art for this movie drew me in to find out more. As I read reviews of
regular people like me I was more sold than ever to give this film a shot. I saw commenters post
that the film was the best horror film of its time, the movie was cursed, and it was a plus that the
famed actress Mia Farrow was involved. Writing that a movie was cursed peaked my interest.
Thus I settled in for the night with excitement to give this movie a go.
I wanted to provide my best opinion on this movie so I opted to watch it twice; once for
my enjoyment and twice to provide information for my assignment. Knowing that I am not that
skilled at understanding cinematography, I will try my best to identify what I feel and see
through the eyes of the camera. I noticed in the movie the use of long shot was used quite often.
The movie seemed like it was shot as if you were Rosemary herself. For instance, there was a
scene where Guy received a call telling him that he got a part in a play because the actor planned
for it is now blind. Both actors were in the kitchen when the phone rang. Guy goes to answer
and the camera pans to him leaving the room, but it is as if it is now in the view of Rosemary.
Shippen 2
Rosemary looking into the room from the kitchen. Her feeling was she wanted to know what was
going on in that room so the camera goes with her over to the room to find out what is happening
with Guy.
The music for the film was just how I would have expected it to be, unnerving. The scene
when guy is undressing Rosemary both in real life and in her dream it is eerily silent with only a
sound of the time ticking. The music that follows sets the tone for what is to come; the taking of
her body by what she will soon come to know as Satin. I also admired at this movement the use
of cutting of the scenes, and the incorporation of subliminal messaging. During this scene the
camerawork and editing makes you feel like Rosemary, spinning out of control and loosing
yourself. This theme of control I sensed throughout the film.
I like how in the film you really get the feeling of how Rosemary was feeling from
beginning to the end. For instance, in the beginning of the film you find Rosemary as this
vibrant, beautiful character who is full of life. Once Rosemary is pregnant you see she is
evolving. Her appearance becomes more and more alarming. As she changes the movie gives
you a feel of her losing control of herself. The camera starts to zoom in on her in scenes and the
music becomes more eerie. You begin to feel like you could be Rosemary; the loose of control
could be anyone of us.
The thing that I found disturbing; or should I say I dislike, was how the movie portrayed
a women. Rosemary was a character that was controlled by men and other. She never really had
a say into stuff. In the scene when Rosemary wakes after being taken by Satan, Guy says her
scratched are from him taking advantage of her while she was passed out. Everyone questioned
her actions and told her what to do. Some suggested her not reading books, and Minnie the next
Shippen 3
door neighbor manipulated her into taking those herbal drinks. All this was a ploy to continue to
shield her from finding out the true nature of her baby.
For me this film was a masterpiece. It was a horror film about Satan but never felt science
fiction. It was horrific because of how they treated her and the fact this could happen to anyone.
No one wants to feel like they have no control. This movie made you feel how Rosemary felt;
insane. The way the camera gives you takes from her point of view gives the film realism. I
loved the way the Castevet’s; played by Ruth Gordon (Minnie) and Sidney Blackmer (Roman),
were portrayed in the film. Minnie’s make up was over the top and too busy just like her
personality. Roman’s appearance and character was likeable and looked up to by Guy. While
watching this feel I felt like I seen a movie similar to; The Exorcist.
I loved this movie and I feel the director Roman Polanski, Cinematographer William A.
Franker, and Film editors; Sam O’Steen and Bob Wyman, did a fantastic job with this movie. I
felt it was original and made you feel uneasy the whole movie. The main actress Mia Farrow was
memorable. Never once did I feel she was fake or her fears where not real. I dislike the actor
John Cassavetes (Guy) because his character was very chauvinistic. With that being said, he
played his role fascinating. The actor made me feel how the director wanted him to be portrayed.
My overall impression of the film was beautiful and mesmerizing. I sat down to watch
this film alone, 10 minutes into the movie my daughter entered the room. She didn’t leave till the
credits rolled. We both had the same emotion from the movie; frustration, uneasiness, and
captivation. Once the movie was done my daughter and I had a conversation about the conduct
of the women and how she would allow such horrible things to be done to her. How she failed to
act on her intuition. I feel like this movie is a must see for anyone and it is deserving of the
awards it has received.

My Criteria for Quality in Film
1)
A quality film must have a script that is easy to follow. It is perfectly fine to feel like
I need to go back and view a film twice to get little details I may have missed. It is not good for
me to feel completely lost as to what the film is trying to tell. Example: Into The Woods (2015)
2)
The characters in the movie must be relatable or allow me to feel how they are feeling.
For musicals I must feel the music that they sing.
Example: Eurovision (2020) “Husavik-My Home town”.
3)
The movie must be entertaining. Every movie does not have to be the greatest movie of
all time, but it must keep my attention. The movies choreography of the movie assist in me being
entertained when we talk action movies.
4)
Special effects in a movie should be good. There are some films that I have seen that
have no so good special effect but the storyline is amazing.
5)
The movie is unique. Finding a storyline that is new vise it being a remake is more
valuable to me. The Old Guard (2020), was an amazing movie that was based off of a comic but
was not a remake of any movie from the past.
On a separate page, insert the heading “My Criteria for Quality in Film.” Under that heading, use your
comments about this film and its filmmaker as guidelines towards proposing five general statements
indicative of your personal taste in movies. These statements should be numbered (1) through (5) and they

propose these two statements as criteria for quality: “(1) Excellent movies feature realistic acting. (2) A movie
is more likely to be good if it ends happily.” Do not just put something like “Good movies feature good
acting.” The point here is for you to think about—and then explain—what such quality words as good,
