Applied Geology (CIVL 0005) FALL 2018 CW3
Department of Civil Engineering
Module Name- Applied Geology
Module Code- CIVL 0005
Course work-3 (Individual coursework)
Date of submission
–
20-12-2018 (12th week as per MIG)
Max Marks
–
100 (Scaled down to 25 Marks)
OBJECTIVE:
A site investigation is an essential part of the preliminary work on any
important civil engineering project/structure. This course work purpose is to obtain
information about the proposed site that can be used by the engineer to achieve a safe and
economical design. It should be noted that site investigation includes legal and
environmental issues besides ground investigation.
Information retrieved during site investigation is diverse and can include past history,
ground strata, and groundwater depths. Rock and soil samples can also be taken to
laboratory for further investigation; and some in-situ tests also are likely to be conducted.
So, the overall objectives are
❖ to assess the general suitability of the site for the proposed work
❖ to gather relevant information that enables an adequate and economical design
❖ to foresee and provide solutions against difficulties that may arise during construction
❖ to predict any adverse effect on the nearby structures and take corrective actions
Applied Geology (CIVL 0005) FALL 2018 CW3
Outcomes (as mentioned in MIG):
1. Describe how natural and man-induced processes can create environments hazardous to civil
engineers and construction projects, and how appropriate mitigation measures are chosen and
adopted.
TASKIn order to meet the module learning outcomes, students will be given some field and lab test data
collected for a proposed hostel building project for Middle East College. Based on the data students
are asked to prepare a site investigation report (including different rocks types, soil types, geologic
structures, and different construction technologies being used at the site).
(NOTE- Data will be given of hostel building or any building or structure. Prepare a
site Investigation report as mentioned above)
Similarly, students will conduct a literature review regarding environments hazardous to civil
engineers and construction projects, and how appropriate mitigation measures are chosen and
adopted.
GUIDELINES:
Follow the guidelines mentioned below for completing the CW
For paper formats (font type, font size, margins, etc.) refer to the lab report preparation
format that had been uploaded earlier.
The structure of the current report is expected to contain at least the following

the CW. It should include the following details
❖ Provide a brief description of the data
Applied Geology (CIVL 0005) FALL 2018 CW3
❖ Incorporate the purpose of the data, and materials and methods (the methodology)
applied
3) INTRODUCTION- In the introduction part of the report, describe the importance of site
investigation and use of soil investigation.
4) MATERIALS AND METHODS
This section covers the data collection and analysis methods, such as lab and field tests
and any other methods used in the course work. Also include the machinery used in the
investigation and testing of trial pits
i. Lab and field tests
The report include method of drilling of the boreholes; number and location of boreholes;
geology from Boreholes (types of the rocks, soils and their depths).
5) RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS
The purpose of a results section is to present and illustrate the findings. Make this section a
completely objective report of the results, and save all interpretations for the discussion. The
objective of the discussion is to provide an interpretation of the results and support for all of
the conclusions, using evidence from the data given. The significance of findings should be
clearly described.
6) CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
❖ How do the ideas in the report connect to what we have discussed in class, or to what
scholars have written in their treatment of the topic?
❖ What new ideas have you added to the conversation? What ideas do you critique?
❖ What are the limitations of the data, methods, or results?
❖ What are the consequences of the strongest idea that comes out of the report?
7) REFERENCES
