Problem:
Population growth has had many positive and negative effects on society.
More than half of the world’s population now live in cities. The need to
provide Food, Fiber, and Shelter to all the populations of the world without

How will we adjust and deal with these growing constrains? How will the
populations lifestyles, philosophy, or theology need to change to adapt?
Assignment:
1.
Define what you think this growing population’s impact will be and
how people’s views will need to adjust. How has Urbanization
affected the planet so far, what have you seen or read?

Hassenzahl, D. (2011).Visualizing Environmental Science, (5th Edition). Wiley.
Assignment:
Select and thoroughly research one important environmental problem or issue
associated with either energy or pollution. Write a research paper that:
1. Defines the problem (Introduction with a thesis statement)
2. Discusses the cause, source, and scope of the problem
3. Presents a case study (example of the problem, copy cut paste cite 4-6 pages)
4. Identifies the key issues and dilemmas associated with the problem
5. Analyzes possible solutions to alleviate the problem
6. Conclusions and consequences for continuing present course of action
7. Recommends a future course of action for local communities
The research paper must include graphics that will better illustrate the dimensions of
the problem. Extra credit will be given for students who construct a working model
that demonstrates a portion of the research.
Students will be expected to give a brief presentation of their research during the last
week of class. The presentation will be in the form of a gallery walk with each
student displaying their work on a poster board and interacting with the class.
Problem: Example
Two important issues will continue to significantly impact life on Earth during your
lifetime: energy and pollution. Chapters 17, and 18 in your textbook define and
explain alternative energy sources and analyze our energy consumption. Chapters 7,
8, 10, 11, 12 and 16 discuss various types of pollution and their sources. It is
unrealistic to believe that students may become expert in all the different aspects of
these two environmental issues during this course. However, individual research
focusing on one specific environmental problem or concern may provide a
framework for understanding similar or related problems in the future.

[Title]: [Subtitle]
[COPY, CUT, PASTE this into a new document please adjust margins. It should be 1” top,
bottom, right, and left. In the following paragraphs you should discuss the following areas and
include as much detail as possible; why you chose this topic, Thesis, define the problem, causes,
scope, sources, impact on ecosystems, key issues, possible solutions, conclusions, consequences,
recommendations. Be sure to have a work cited page. Replace all of the following text with your
paper after you have read the information in each. Pictures, tables, and graphs can be included on
the page before work cited. Should be 7-12 pages long with case study attached, it may be longer
depending on case study. Insert and number more pages as needed. Times New Roman 12]
[Research papers that use MLA format do not include a cover page unless requested by your
instructor. Instead, start with the information shown at the top of this page. Do not bold the title or
use all capital letters. Capitalize the first and last words of the title, and all principal words. If your
paper includes a subtitle, separate it from the title by a colon and space, as shown. For more specific
guidance on capitalization, see the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th Edition
(MLA 7th Edition).]
[All text—including titles, quotations, notes, and list of works cited—uses double line
spacing. Body text and note text use a half-inch first-line indent. The list of works cited uses a halfinch hanging indent. Table titles and source text use a quarter-inch indent. Access all of these text
formats on the Home tab, in the Styles gallery.]
[MLA format discourages extensive use of content notes. But, when you need to add notes,
you can use either endnotes or footnotes. MLA 7th Edition indicates that you should use a

superscript, Arabic numeral at an appropriate place in the text for the note reference. To
begin the note text, use the same numeral, not superscript, and followed by a period.]
[If you use endnotes, they should be on a separate page, at the end of your text and
preceding the list of works cited. If you use footnotes, consult your professor for preferred format.]
[For quotations of more than four lines, indent the quote one inch from the left
margin and do not use quotation marks. To apply this formatting, on the Home tab,
in the Styles gallery, click Quote. For shorter quotations, you can put them in
quotation marks, and incorporate them directly into text.]

[The sample Works Cited list that follows was created using the Bibliography feature
available on the References tab. This feature offers the option to specify MLA style, so that your
references are automatically formatted correctly. You can also use this feature to add in-text
citations, such as the one shown at the end of this paragraph. To add page numbers to a citation after
you insert it, right-click the citation and then click Edit Citation. Note also that MLA rules for
citations and references are extensive. So it’s a good idea to refer to MLA 7th Edition for further
information.] (AuthorLastName Pages)
[To use this template when creating the outline for your paper, on the Home tab, in the
Styles gallery, click No Indent. Then, on the same tab, in the Paragraph group, click the Multilevel
List icon and then click the MLA Outline style that appears under List Styles. The first six levels of
this list style correspond to the outline levels defined in MLA 7th Edition.]
For additional guidance on formatting your research paper, consult MLA 7th Edition as well
as your instructor.
