There are two parts to this question. Please make sure to answer both parts.PART ONE:
Name at least two overlapping characteristics for each of the
indigenous groups (Pueblo(Acoma Nation), Algonquin(Pocahontas),
Cherokee(Mary Musgrove), Iroquois) before contact with Europeans? Choose
two characteristics that overlap between these four groups or you can
choose to tackle two groups specifically. An example might be that the
Acoma and the Iroquois share a belief that the world was started with
women. Consider how this is different from European understandings of
the start of mankind. Do you think this has any impact on the way they
view women? You will notice that most of these groups not only feature
women in their understanding of the beginning of the world and mankind,
but these cultures also allow for female participation in religious
rituals (leadership). This must use the key terms/vocabulary discussed
in your textbook. VALUE: 4 pointsAdvice: this question is in regards to the PRECONTACT period, and remember to defend your response. This should be based on the Chapter 1 readings onlyFor
full points you must reference your textbook and one of the sources
from this week’s readings. Make sure to identify the page number.PART TWO: Mary Musgrove is from the period after European contact. She is a metis. Using her letter for examples and the secondary source (article by Guillespe) please answer the following question:Why
do you think Mary Musgrove’s husband is at the meeting she interrupts,
but she does not mention her husband in her letter to the British? Please choose 2 quotes and identify why these support your stance/position/opinion. VALUE: 6 points (3 points for each quote and explanation).Example:
“I come from the aristocracy” (Musgrove Letter, 72) –Musgrove sees the
British value aristocrats in their own political system and seeks to
make a parallel to the British world view.
