McMaster University Do Canadians Really Care About Climate Change Discussion

Description

Please answer one of the following questions as per the instructions in the forum description. You are also to respond to a colleagues post (a single post may be responded to numerous times if it interests you). Don’t forget to post your answer (both your original post and your reply) to the assignment box (Discussion #1). 1. Do Canadians really care about Climate Change? Not what you or even your cohort of friends and family feel, but Canadians in general? Are they willing to make real changes in their behaviors to help mitigate this issue? 2. How has Canada’s Geography (either physical or social) helped/hinder the battle with COVID-19? 3. How has Canada’s Physical Geography contributed to the shaping of the cultural identity? 4. How will Climate Change impact Canadians? Base your answer on a single impact such as agriculture or tourism (the impact may be positive or negative). 5. Given the effects of globalization on the economy of Canada and its regions, develop an argument for or against proposals to expand the capacity of the St Lawrence Seaway to accommodate larger ocean-going vessels (many of which cannot presently use the Seaway). What impacts would expanding or not expanding the system’s capacity have on the economies of Ontario and Québec? 6. Southern Ontario accounts for much of Canada’s agricultural output by value. At the same time, nearly 40 per cent of the country’s population is concentrated in a tiny area defined by the Great Lakes–St Lawrence Lowlands. What problems are encountered as a result of this coincidence of features? Should agricultural land be protected, and if so what measures would you recommend, especially given the demand from urban land uses and activities?

Give some reply of this .
Climate change is undoubtedly the largest issues future generations are forced to
grapple with. We often see politicians from different parties speak about the
importance of renewable resources; however, we have come to expect that they will
still rely upon fossil fuels. This inability to stick to promises should unnerve
Canadians- but does it really?
Canadian citizens have turned towards their government to seek leadership when
it comes to climate change, since they have the power to place laws and regulations
(The Environics Institute, 2014). After the 2015 Federal election, Justin Trudeau was
seen as a global leader to combat against climate change. However, Canadians have
taken note over the past five years how his words reflect Canada moving towards
their green promises, yet Canada still continues to expand fund the oil and gas
sector. Angela Carter, a professor of political sciences at the University of Waterloo,
worded the federal government’s inaction best by explaining it as a “deeply
contradictory approach” (Abedi, 2019). She later elaborates that the government
is “torn between its stated desire to act on the climate crisis, but it’s interest in
boosting the oil and gas sector” (Abedi, 2019).
This inaction by government officials should cause dismay to the voters who elected
them- but not as much as you may think. An article released by CBC News prior to
the 2019 Federal election displayed statistics that only a quarter of the surveyed
Canadian citizens would be willing to pay more than nine dollars a month to fund
federal climate change efforts (Grenier, 2019). The survey also contained a statistic
that 32 percent of Canadians would be unwilling to pay any money at all (Grenier,
2019). Canadians are conflicted because they know that cleaner energy sources
often come with a heavy price tag. Additionally, a study conducted by the David
Suzuki foundation contained information which stated that 45 percent of Canadians
polled thought that spending over 100 dollars a year on climate change actions was
unreasonable (The Environics Institute, 2014).
Canadians residents as well as their government are both faced with climate change
dilemmas of their own. Residents want government action when it comes to this
issue but are not accepting of the fact that these plans need taxpayer money, and
the federal government is conflicted between clean initiatives to support the future
and the income stability of fossil fuels.
