Course Description: This course is an introduction to beginning rock climbing and
covers the terminology, equipment, technical and safety skills appropriate for the
novice level climber. Students will have several opportunities to experience climbing
and to put lecture, discussion, and reading materials into practice

Be aware of the many different types of rock climbing activities
Identify, use and care correctly for rock climbing equipment
Demonstrate an understanding of the terminology associated with rock
climbing
Demonstrate an understanding of proper belay technique, climbing and site
management procedures by using them at all times when engaged in these
activities
Demonstrate the basic principles of climbing movement
Be aware of the dangers associated with rock climbing and understand how
they can be minimized and avoided
Investigate the environmental and ethical issues regarding climbing on private
and public lands
