Our chapter says “If diseases or pests attack these plants, an
important agricultural region would be in crisis. In contrast,
areas where multiple and different varieties of crops are
grown may lose some of their harvest to a pest, but other
crops will survive to provide sustenance.” This stood out to
me because in our area the two main crops are cotton and
sorghum which are alternated year to year. From 1995 1996 we had a cotton boll weevil program that came in to
help eradicate our cotton crops from this crop
destroying bug. Years later the U.S. made it mandatory
and used the Rio Grande Valley as a buffer area between
Mexico and the U.S. and the Boll Weevil
Eradication Program was around once again. This bug “boll
weevil” only affects the cotton crops, but does nothing to
the sorghum. I find this interesting.
