POST
first commentI think Aeneid reveals the duty of the family, the duty of the state, and the relationship between humans and gods in Roman civilization. Western civilization was essentially Roman civilization because western civilization was inspired by Roman civilization in religion, politics, in art.Aeneid’s father and Dido can represent family duty. Aeneid was a son to his father, and after his father’s death, Aeneid held a grand funeral for his father and buried him here in Sicily. (Book 5) He then arranged sports events to commemorate, never forgetting that his father’s ashes were stored in this sacred place. For Dido, her suicide was all about Aeneid. Dido is too obsessed with Aeneid, and Aeneid’s departure is undoubtedly doomed to this sad relationship. However, I felt his vital family duty when Aeneid went to the underworld. He saw the spirit of Dido and knew that he had died for himself. As for national duty, I think it is mainly reflected in the latter part of the epic, especially in the war scenes. Aeneid’s final battle with Turnus was the climax of National Duty. First, they set up some committees to solve the problems of the war sensibly, which is responsible to the people. Nevertheless, the wars that followed were more about preserving the dignity of race and nation. Aeneid finally kills Turnus because Turnus has hurt his most important partner and harmed Troy. (Book 12)The relationship between God and humans in the epic is close. Aeneid, the son of Venus, received a lot of protection, which shows Venus’ interference in many things, such as the relationship with Dido, the protection of Neptune, the weapons of the later war, and the treatment of the wounded. However, I think what is interesting about the epic is that it does not rely entirely on the gods and that in the final duel, the gods begin to detach from the events and look at the situation in the third person. (Book 10) This is a chance for humans, a chance for man to write his own history. It also reflects the attitude of Roman civilization, that we believe in God, but we also dominate our empire. The Roman civilization is undoubtedly the most influential of all western civilizations. Roman civilization established western civilization in religious, political, and art. Greece influenced the Roman civilization’s view of God. Meanwhile, the emergence of Christianity in The Roman period has influenced the West and even the whole world. As for politics, the political relationship of monarchies lasted for a long time in Europe until Europe got rid of feudalism. The development of society was varied, and the field of written art flourished during the Roman period. In addition to this, Rome is famous for its architectural field. This style of architecture was typical in Europe. There is no doubt that Roman civilization is the cornerstone of western civilization, so western civilization is essentially Roman civilization.
second commentAeneid reveals the respect for the gods, love and loyalty to the state and family, and being very dependent on fate. The western civilization in a way is still essentially Roman civilization due to those aspects. In The Aeneid, it reveals that they had much respect for the gods because they thought of the gods as their protectors in wars and were thought to be irreplaceable. In Book 2, lines 692-693, it talks about a father who’s worshipping the gods and praying for their protection as they are preparing to leave for the Trojan Race. Also, in book 5, lines 61-65, it demonstrates how respect was shown as Aeneas’ father died and Aeneas was celebrating by giving offerings to the gods. It also revealed in The Aeneid that citizens had lots of love and loyalty to the state and their families as war played a big factor in the story. In book 3, lines 71-74, a man was sending his daughter away from all the bad things that war has brought upon them. By sending his daughter away from such an event, it demonstrates showing fatherly love as he is trying to send her away to safety while he stays behind. Also, in the beginning of book 1, lines 1-16, it talks about Aeneas who was kicked out of the Trojan shore even though he worked and fought so hard to rebuild his empire. It also mentioned Aeneas’ pride in Rome and even though he is just a man, he was brave enough to fight for his people. Aeneas was considered a hero as he played an important part in defending his people and his city during war. Lastly, in The Aeneid it revealed a lot about being dependent on fate. In book 3, as Aeneas continues his story about the aftermath of the fall of Troy, and are struggling with hunger. In book 3, lines 374-375, it talks about how hunger shouldn’t be something to be afraid of and believes fate will lead them to where they need to be. During mid story of book 3, they state that they relate to heaven in a sense that they are in partial peace and that fate is leading them the right way.
