Historic and Contemporary Influences
You will research the cultural and historical context for your work, finding specific examples and individuals who
inspire your ideas, who work similarly, and who inspire you. If you are working on a project that has historical
connotations, art and design styles or a specific style that serves as precedence, it should be researched and
discussed in this paper. If your work is influenced by a specific culture or cultural and historical event, your
research will reflect this. It is important that you focus your research. Your Statement must be used as a guide for
the references you select. Your Statement and focused questions prevent your research from becoming too broad.
Your Assignment: Research a variety of references that will contribute to the historic and contemporary influences
for your project. Determine what was done in the past, what is being created now, and who are your predecessors
and/or contemporaries. You want to discover, understand, and apply the accumulated knowledge in your field.
You are looking for a direction for your own explorations and fresh pathways for your imagination and creativity.
On the basis of research, you will begin to refine your approach to your art making by considering improvements,
providing another point of view, or extending the knowledge you discover.
Guiding questions (The following questions serve as a “guide.”):

Who has used ideas like yours in the past?
Who is pursuing these ideas now?
Is the resulting work similar to or different from that which you envision for your own project?
Has something similar been created?
Whose work has influenced you conceptually? How?
Whose work has influenced you technically? How?
Whose work has influenced you materially? How?
Whose work has influenced you aesthetically? How?
Whose work has influenced you intellectually? How?
What have you learned through close examination of those influences?
How are you extending their work in a new direction?
How do you propose to push the material, concept, technique, aesthetic, or other aspect of the work
forward in a new direction?
The paper should be between 2500 and 5000 words. All writing must have an introduction, summary, images and a
bibliography section that adheres to the MLA rules for formatting and citation. Papers must also include images of
your creative work for your project that you are doing in studio (i.e., sketches, storyboarding, media
experimentations). You must be very clear in your writing about how the research relates/connects to your project.
Be prepared to give a 3-minute, informal presentation the day the paper is due, detailing the main concepts and
specific relationship(s) to your project. Remember to specifically connect the writing/research to your creative work.

assignment objectives were met.
Project background
The Palace Museum in Beijing is a well-known historical site in China. It attracted my attention
when I first heard its name when I was in primary school before I visited there in person. I was
amazed by its name, though called “Museum” in English; it is horned as “Bo Wu Yuan”(博
物院) in Chinese, indicating that it stands as a higher level compared as normal museums, which
are called “Bo Wu Guan”(博物馆)。I started to research the meaning for its name and reasons
before visiting there.
The political and social causes
Since the museum is located not far from Tiananmen Square in Beijing, a city that is always
considered as the political-center and capital city of China, the political and social cause of The
Palace Museum makes it different from other museums in China. It could be regarded as the
oldest national museum in China, with “a supreme establishment that collects, researches,
displays and interprets China’s fine traditional culture, revolutionary culture, and advanced
socialist culture”(National Museum of China official website,2020). Apart from taking an
educating role, the museum takes a political and social role as a masterwork of nationalism. For
example, leaders of the Chinese Communist Party and the 18th CPC Central Committee Political
Bureau visited “The Road of Rejuvenation” in 2012. President Xi affirmed the positive role of
the museum, by displaying national treasures and educating the public, to the rejuvenation of
China(Xin Hua, 2012).
In addition, how the museum affects the political accomplishment of Chinese citizens interests
me。I found out the answer when I was in the museum by discovering an exhibition of Chairman
Mao. He was a leader who made the Republic of China came to power. He made sufficient effort
to develop China, however, there were some drawbacks to his work that caused a different
comment from the world. An exhibition of oil paintings of Mao could be found in the museum.
The works are about real historical events of when he did and his achievements. The New York
Times in 2011 indicates that the Communist Party is to control the narrative history. What
interests me is how a museum could function as a political-educating place to the public. More
non-bias papers and ideas should be researched during my project.
Artistic influence
The museum is with a huge number of collectors from China’s previous dynasties. There are over
a million precious pieces of art in China’s mainland Palace Museum in Beijing (Chinahighlights,
2020). Xinhua News in 2011 indicates that the museum has a total of 1,807,558 art pieces,
including ceramics, painting, jade, and sculpture. Most of the art relics are a valuable treasures
from royal families. The rich artistic resources make the museum one of the great valuable art
place.
The external design of the Palace Museum also intrigues me. Located in the Forbidden City,
which emphasizes the harmony between humans and nature. The environment is amazed to see.
Not like modern museums in the West, the Palace Museum in Beijing is more like a high-level
park, since it is a work from professional designers and architects a hundred years ago.
