Description
First part: Download this attached document for instructions and data recording sheet for your water audit and conservation exercise. Fill it out over the 4 days that you track your water use.. talk about your insights into how much water could be saved with simple conservation behaviors.
Second part: Water audit and conservation discussion. Also, would you use a water tracking app on your smart phone if it provided interesting statistics and motivational tips? Would you be interested in helping a fellow student develop such an app?

Water Audit and Conservation Plan
Initial Water Audit:
Determine the flow rate of a faucet that you regularly use by collecting water in a container of known
volume and tracking how many seconds it takes to fill the container. Repeat 3 times (or more), and
calculate an average.
___________ (volume of container) / __________ (minutes to fill) = _________volume/min
___________ (volume of container) / __________ (minutes to fill) = _________volume/min
___________ (volume of container) / __________ (minutes to fill) = _________volume/min
Average Flow Rate: _________volume/min
For two full days, keep a log of how many seconds or minutes you use that faucet for. Determine the
total number of minutes the faucet is used per day. Then determine how many gallons or liters per day
that is.
Day 1: Total minutes used _____________
Day 2: Total minutes used _____________
Average number of minutes used per day: _____________
Avg number of gallons or liters used per day =
Avg flow rate ______ x Avg minutes used _______ = _______ gallons or liters per day
Extrapolate use over an entire year:
_______ gallons or liters per day x 365 days = ________________gallons or liters per year
Extrapolate use for all residents in Florida for a year:
________gallons or liters per year x 21,000,000 residents =
_________________gallons or liters used by all Florida residents per year
Water Conservation Plan:
Consider how you might change your behavior to reduce the amount of water you use from that
faucet. Try those behaviors for two days, and track your use of the faucet for those two days.
Behavior change: I will ______________________________________________________
Day 1: Total minutes used _____________
Day 2: Total minutes used _____________
Average number of minutes used per day: _____________
Avg number of gallons or liters used per day =
Avg flow rate ______ x Avg minutes used _______ = _______ gallons or liters per day
How many gallons or liters per day to you save with this behavior?
Volume used before conservation behavior __________
– Volume used after conservation behavior ___________
= ______________gallons or liters saved per day by conservation behavior.
Extrapolate savings over an entire year:
_______ gallons or liters saved per day x 365 days = _________gallons or liters saved per year
Extrapolate savings if all residents in Florida changed their behavior in this way for a year:
________gallons or liters saved per year x 21,000,000 residents =
______________gallons or liters saved by all Florida residents per year
On the Discussion Board called “Water Conservation,” compare the amount you could potentially save
to some other interesting statistic about freshwater use.
Also, would you use an app to help you track your daily water use that offered interesting information
and statistics and other motivations to help your reduce your water use? What might that app look
like? (If you would be interested in helping a student who is developing such an app, let Dr. Anderson
know!)
