Description
Draw the long axis X and the short axis Y into the ellipse. Pay attention: X and Y are perpendicular to each other and should cross the centre of the ellipse. Calculate the ratio R = X/Y and write your result next to the ellipse.

How to proceed:
1. Draw a reference line (in this case horizontal line and 7 cm long) on the second half of
the paper. Number each fossil (1-12).

2. Mark/highlight the longitudinal (hinge line) line and the median (symmetry line) line of
each fossil. You can use different colours to identify each fossil later during the
projection.

3. Start with fossil No. 1. Project the longitudinal line of fossil No. 1 at point A of the
reference line by parallel shifting or measuring the angle. Project the median line of
fossil No. 1 at point B of the reference line by parallel shift of measuring the angle. Both
projected lines have to intersect. Link both lines. Label this intersection with No. 1. The
size of the triangle determines the size of the ellipse.

4. Mirror the resulting triangle below the reference line A-B for fossil No. 1.

5. Proceed with all fossils the same way.
6. If your projections are precise you can connect all intersections and you will get an
ellipse. If an intersection is to far from the ellipse you should check this projection.
(Attention: This is not the result of this exercise! It
is just an example)
7. Draw the long axis X and the short axis Y into the ellipse. Pay attention: X and Y are
perpendicular to each other and should cross the centre of the ellipse. Calculate the
ratio R = X/Y and write your result next to the ellipse.
